HOW DO YOU BRAND FROM THE INSIDE?

10 October 2018

How do you get your employees to live and breathe the brand you’ve created? How do you get them to convey it your customers?

What is little understood in branding is that it isn’t just the words in a mission statement, it’s the living breathing core of everything that you do.

It is just as umportant to live your brand internally as well as externally. There is no point in selling great products and services and telling anyone who’ll listen that you are wonderful while putting handwritten notes in their purchases if you don’t, in some way, appreciate your staff in the same manner. The easy way to do it is staff incentive packages, bonuses, shares and medical benefits; the more sincere way is to treat them with respect, kindness, fairness and honestly. Even a simple thank you goes a long way. If you want staff to be the conduit for your brand, make them believe it by leading by example.

Ways To Live The Brand

If you’re just starting out and looking to populate your fledgling company with new hires it starts at the interview stage. You want to take on people who understand what your company is trying to do and can carry that forward. Even if the purpose is as stark as ‘selling cheap goods in large quantities’. You can tailor the interview questions to see whether the prospective employee can get on board; using a skilled interviewer you can tell whether the interviewee is blagging or genuinely interested in helping you thrive.

If you are already established and need to get your current staff back on track then consider a team building day which would include a briefing to re-state the company’s purpose.

Consider asking staff for input with bonuses for ideas that work if implemented.

Slip a hand-written note of appreciation with personal comments on some aspect of their work in with their pay packet.

Create a zero tolerance policy on office bullying, staff gossip, inequality and inequity. Provide staff with a safe way to report instances of violations.

Be seen by your staff, come down from your lofty position and talk to them. Make them feel important . . . because essentially they are. They are the ones with their shoulder to the wheel.

Your Staff Are Also A Source of Word of Mouth

As much as your customers are capable of spreading the love for you, don’t overlook your staff. Treat your staff well and they will not only perform well for you but will extol your company’s virtues to others too.

Sadly, the opposite will also be true and word of mouth is virtually viral so you can guarantee that the bad news will travel fast.
